Who could've guessed?

A few weeks ago, a kid was taken by his mother at 3pm from foster care. At 4am, we all were blasted awake by an Amber Alert. Kid was found safe the next day, but in the news story about it, in the comments, there were a number of self righteous martyrs criticizing the rest of us for complaining about losing our "precious sleep" because, after all, isn't the life of a child important?

Well, yes, sleep god damn IS precious, and I sure as heck don't want to be walking out in the morning with the girls when none of the drivers got enough of it the night before! I mean, honestly, the drivers on Staten Island are bad enough when they're rested!

Another NY friend complained about this. What does "blasted awake by an Amber alert" sound like? Are there sirens outside or something? You don't only hear about it by turning on the radio or tv, clearly, but I can't figure out what happens there that doesn't happen here. I only know about Amber alerts if I watch tv.
