http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0712/78068.htmlBasically, he was super conservative at 13, and in four short years has done a complete 180 in many of his opinions. Interestingly, despite the massive change in his opinions he doesn't seem (judging from this article) to be any more aware of the potential for personal growth in the future than he presumably was back in 2009. Even if the general shape of his opinions is now going to stay the same, the details are likely to change. I can picture him in another ten years wondering why he was so adamant at 17!
Of course, there's no point telling him that. Is there anybody, at any age, who really wants to believe that their thoughts, feelings, and opinions might drastically change as they get older, and that inevitably they'll consider their younger selves to have been immature and naive? I would never have believed that at 17, and I'm not entirely sure I believe it now, though experience suggests that I probably should.
