Hello, the seventh!
When my father made gumbo, he used the little shrimp in cans. I managed to snag some nice big ones in the refrigerated section at whole foods at a good price, so I used those.
It's funny, but as much as our family was mostly about eating at the table together growing up, I remember taking my plate of gumbo, heading out my window, and eating on the fire escape. I say I ate gumbo, but as I recall I mostly ate the shrimp, dumped some of it between the slats (much of the year, I was the only one who went to the backyard at all, and all of the year I was the only one who paid attention to the paved part!), and went back for seconds. But I might remember it wrong.
