Finding out that the obviously cheaper option is, in fact, more expensive.

Which costs more? A re-usable (more or less) container of organic garlic cloves (peeled), with a screwtop lid, or the same weight of conventional garlic cloves (peeled) in a flimsy container where the lid never goes on right?

The organic, of course! By 16 cents a pound.

Which costs more? A pound of butter from my local (cheap-o) supermarket, or a pound of butter with no growth hormones from Whole Foods in Manhattan?

The healthier version, naturally! By a good two dollars! (Their goat cheese is also two dollars cheaper than here on the island.)

Which costs more? Peanut butter (Jif) at Western Beef, or peanut butter (all natural, salt and peanuts) from the uberly over-priced A&P at Union Square?

No contest, AND their "all fruit" jelly is cheaper too, and their bread.

It's just not fair! (Most things, of course, are cheaper out of Manhattan, they can hardly help but be, but that is beside the point.)
