They've been doing this for months. It's only recently that Evangeline's been starting to assert herself a little and insist on a turn being the mom - first she'd chase her sister around whining. Then when that didn't work, she turned to making dolls and me the baby and saying they could *both* be the mommy. Aw.
Anyway, they still do often play that Ana is her sister's mother, and let me tell you it can be very disconcerting! Jenn was shocked the first day she heard Evangeline cry "Mommy, Mommy" and she turned around and got told "NOT YOU!"
You get used to it, weird though this is.
Today, we're in the playground, Teardrop Park. I'm sitting on one of the oh-so-ancient rocks, reading a book. Evangeline clambered up behind me, asked me to clap, then did it a few more times - she was really proud she didn't need help*.
All of a sudden, a little girl (6.5, I asked) came up and told Evangeline that she needed to go "back to your Mommy". I was quite startled, and looked around to see who was behind this half-assed abduction scheme...
But really, I should not have bothered. Ana was waving her little hands off. "Here, Baby!"
They've even got other kids doing it now. It's... surreal.
*Later that afternoon, as we were sitting on a wall waiting for the bus, Evangeline slid off. If she'd slid off the same side we'd climbed up on, that would have merely been interesting - that side goes to the bottom of my butt. Instead, she slid off on the *opposite* side, into the park. THAT side goes up to my chest. I saw her sitting as though on a bed, reached out, but she dropped down and giggled. Luckily, Ellen-who-works-there was ready and able to pick her up and hand her back. Evangeline was put out not to be allowed back on the wall, but if she's gonna pull a silly stunt like that...!
