You know, in our "Midsummer = First Day of Summer!" culture, it's sensible to think of this as the height of summer.

And it is, in a way. It's hot, and there's a lot of sun, and people go to the beach a lot, and we have some violent storms, and it's summer.

But it's just as easy to see why this might be considered the start of fall. The leaves on the London Planes are starting to turn, just a little. The rose bushes are full of bright red rosehips. The thistles are full of thistledown, the sort that you jump up and catch to make a wish. We're getting a ton of food from the CSA - we just got corn last week - so all the harvests are clearly coming in. (Next year I'll be more prepared with jars to start canning!) Those storms all break the heat.

Of course, however you slice it, we're not *nearly* far enough in the year to start selling Halloween candy. Deal with start-of-school first, people! Sheesh.
