Encourage them to do things like sweep or scrape their plates and whatever.
And I was reading this, going "How stupid!"
I certainly have no intention of encouraging Ana to sweep. That'd would be entirely counterproductive! No, rather, I allow her to sweep, if and only if her mom says it's okay, and Ana agrees to be careful and to actually get some sweeping done, and only if she's proven she's mature enough to handle this responsibility. Result? I've conned her into thinking that sweeping is fun, and with a minimum of effort on my part. Sometimes, to accomplish the goal of actually sweeping (she is only three, after all), I insist we take turns. I WANNA SWEEP TOOOOOO! is my claim.
As for clearing her plate and likewise, I don't encourage her to do that either. I expect it - that's the rule in her house. She's three, she doesn't weigh much yet, but that only makes it easier for her to pull her own weight.
Honestly, I'm not sure what people are thinking sometimes!

I have a question about natural dyes.
Sep. 2nd, 2006 12:59 pmI want to dye some cloth soon. (And why do people insist on saying fabric? Is there a subtle difference that I don't know about, so cloth just isn't good enough?)
I want to use natural dyes, if possible.
Well, summer's over (don't give me that equinox bit, you know my opinions on that!), it's rainy, and I don't want to wander the streets of NYC looking for plants to use to dye with, so I want to use natural dyes from plants and such that I can buy at a supermarket.
Other than onion skins, coffee, and tea, I mean.
Any ideas? With colors, amabo te.

Even if there isn't in my neighborhood store, there will be elsewhere, I can ask around. So, if it's available in *your* local supermarket (or equivilant), I'm interested.
Really, we've got the weirdest stuff in our local stores. Jenn's corner stores (two of them) sell fresh ginger, extracts, dates... and Quaker Oats Instant Grits. In packets. With flavorings.
Why is it that oatmeal gets sweet flavorings, various types of fruits, but grits gets savory ones, butter, bacon, and cheese? There's nothing inherantly "can't be savory" about oatmeal - look at haggis! And I doubt grits Must Not Be Near Sweet Things Ever, so... what gives?
