Encourage them to do things like sweep or scrape their plates and whatever.

And I was reading this, going "How stupid!"

I certainly have no intention of encouraging Ana to sweep. That'd would be entirely counterproductive! No, rather, I allow her to sweep, if and only if her mom says it's okay, and Ana agrees to be careful and to actually get some sweeping done, and only if she's proven she's mature enough to handle this responsibility. Result? I've conned her into thinking that sweeping is fun, and with a minimum of effort on my part. Sometimes, to accomplish the goal of actually sweeping (she is only three, after all), I insist we take turns. I WANNA SWEEP TOOOOOO! is my claim.

As for clearing her plate and likewise, I don't encourage her to do that either. I expect it - that's the rule in her house. She's three, she doesn't weigh much yet, but that only makes it easier for her to pull her own weight.

Honestly, I'm not sure what people are thinking sometimes!

we do that with kira too. she already begs to "wash weenows" (windows, of course) and wipe the table. and i "let" her on special occasions.

with putting the soap tab in the dishwasher, well, that's been her "job" since she was 13 months old, and she gets mad if she sees me do it. so that one i don't know how to categorize. i don't force her to do it. i ask if she wants to and she drops WHATEVER she is doing and runs over to the dishwasher. if she happens not to run right over, i do it and deal with the resulting tantrum (after she realized she really DID want to do it). kids are hilarious.

*LOL* I actually like sweeping. It's one of the few chores I can tolerate, much less like.

Hm, maybe if I could reclaim the "fun" of playing with caulinders and funnels while washing dishes....
