And Conrad's Fate was out! The new Chrestomanci book? I didn't buy it. As a rule, I don't buy hardcover. They're more expensive and cumbersome, plus they mess with the neat "all paperback" thing I've got going on. However, in this case, I didn't buy Conrad's Fate because I was busy buying a different new release - the new Hilari Bell book.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I really really love this author. I spent no less than five minutes directing somebody in the bookstore towards her books, talking all about how much I love this author.

She needs more love, and a scary fandom. Everybody else gets that, so why not Hilari Bell? Please. Go off. Read the Farsala trilogy. Read any of her books. I implore thee.

In the scene where we meet Seth, Tad-the-Cad is trying to insult him.

Let's think back to high school. You're a jerk. In fact, you're the sort of guy who takes videos of his girlfriend doing obscene things to food objects while she's drugged, and then uses it to blackmail her into staying with you - and when she dumps you, you send the video to the whole world! Hard to be more of an asshole than that. Oh, and you're a bit homophobic. How much, we don't know, but you certainly aren't signing up for the next Pride parade.

So here you are, trading insults with The Gay Kid, and he's insinuated that you're gay because after all "isn't joining the Navy gay enough to get you kicked out of the Navy?". And what's your reply? Well, uh, the prom is for traditional couples?

WTF? Tad-the-Cad couldn't come up with a better reply than "traditional couples"? If I were in the mood to just randomly insult gay people (not likely, but let's pretend), I could come up with some better insults than that! Traditional couples. Who the fuck even *says* things like that, outside of Concerned Parents^TM?

And Tad-the-Cad is the guy who's twisted enough to take dirty videos of his girlfriend without her permission, and keep them hanging around for over a year, just in case they come in handy. He can't come up with a better insult than that? Weak, really weak.

I need a different icon. I love this, but I can only use it so much....

It reminds me of my high school graduation. This graduation sucked for a number of reasons (more for my sister, I think, who got burned after ignoring my sage advice to use sunblock), but there were a few amusing parts. For example, the running count of "how often will they mention 9/11 during the graduation" and (my favorite) the Moment of Silence. During this Moment of Silence, one poor hapless kid was stuck on his cell phone, going "no, I'm in the third row - the third row! Mom, I have to go now. Mom, I have to go!" until the kid next to him just took the phone away. Because during the graduation (the Moment of Silence, no less) is just the perfect time to call your kid and tell him that you don't know where he is. Really, you'll figure it out when he gets his diploma case, won't you? (They don't give out real diplomas at the graduation. You have to swing by the day after, which I didn't do, and apparently it does *not* get sent in the mail. To this day, I have not seen my high school diploma once)

How reliable is this?

If I'm reading it right, it sounds like they maneuvered Sadaam into a spot where war wouldn't appear to be illegal. Which is... well, wrong, to say the least.
