Mnemonics, when done properly, can help you remember things. Chanting "King Phillip Comes Over For Good Sex" can help you remember the order of classification: Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Saying "King Phillip Can Order Fine Gold and Silver" will cause problems if you try to add an A word in there, but should be essentially fine.

It took me several years to memorize the order of the planets in our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and maybe Pluto) because somehow I memorized the sentence "My Very Energetic Mother Just Gave Us Nine Pizzas" where I should've said served. *sighs*

Yes. This was random.

The acronym mnemonic "DOC" represents the shape of the Moon: "D" is the waxing moon; "O" the full moon; and "C" the waning moon). In the Southern hemisphere, this is reversed, and the mnemonic is "COD".

What, seriously? COOOOOOOL!

I need sleep.

Notable quote found in my sociolinguistics packet. This is a quote that sociolinguists would tend to disagree with.

You could have fooled me. I thought it was correct to write 'we were' and incorrect to write 'we was'. I did not realise it was just a question dialect: I thought it was a question of grammar or, if you do not like that word, of logic. You cannot use the singular form of the verb with a plural pronoun.

(emphasis totally mine)

Logic? Logic? How can he think of talking about logic in a system where the singular second person plural is supposed to take, oh yes, a plural form of the verb? I was, you were, he/she/it was, we/you/they were. That's logic? Or does he say "you was"? If so, I'm impressed. Most people taking his stance wouldn't.

Head-hurty....

Did somebody repeal the laws of common courtesy? Because I always thought it was polite to stay on topic instead of randomly veering off into tangents. Maybe it's just me. (And youse guys are lucky I'm not showing the "poor dying kitty" post that found its way onto bush_sucks....)

Taken from [livejournal.com profile] feminist.

Our current voting system should be illegal because the people should be democratically voting for their president. The president should be decided by the popular vote.

While I completely agree that our current system is fucked up, I certainly do not agree that "our system that doesn't use a popular vote should be discarded because we should use the popular vote". That doesn't make any sense. (It also doesn't explain why we should use the popular vote in elections, which would be nice)

Edit: I give up. It's no use expecting logic from somebody who thinks that it's a feminist issue because she herself posted it in a feminist forum. Wha-?
