Fun fact: Hoarding canned goods is actually recommended by Mormons. I'm still not clear on how disaster preparedness is tied to religion, but it's not bad advice all the same to be ready for zombie apocalypses storms. You won't end up like me, at the store with all the other lazybones at the very last minute. Well, at least it's always amusing seeing what other people have apparently decided is an urgent necessity they MUST stock up on before the storm hits.

Indeed. Well, any durable goods, for that matter: water in plastic canisters, wheat in airtight buckets, rice, whatever.

Good question. It just seemed self-evident to me that having something around "for a rainy day" was a reasonable idea that I never thought much about why the church preached such preparedness.

I think it's connected to the welfare program, but I imagine that such supplies are used more often during times when you can't get to the shops (due to a storm, for example) rather than during times when you can't afford to go to the shops (because you just lost your job, for example). So I don't know.

I'm pretty sure it's advocated by the religion because 1. the early founding families had to flee several times before winding up in Utah, and having emergency supplies literally saved the faithful 2. end times prophecies, with a bit more thought put into them than the usual conspiracies.

I have a vague mental association between the Mormons storing food, and the Donner Party. I'm not sure at the moment whether any real association exists.

Last winter a couple of local DJs were laughing about how storms caused an irresistible craving for French toast. People suddenly have to get bread, milk and eggs, after all.
