Ooh, I HATE the word/name Buddy. My coworker in Tucson, Ed, used to call me that and it drove me nuts. I expressed to him my exceedingly strong dislike for the word and had to be really firm because he was in the habit of calling EVERYONE buddy, it turned out. He got it after I told him not to call me that a few times. We actually ARE friends now, so if he called me that now, I wouldn't correct him, but when he had just started working there and was a talkative guy I didn't like, I was not amused by him calling me buddy. I still don't like it at all, but I would let him "slip up" just because we put up with each other's shit now.

I don't think I agree with the article's conflation of "I call my kid 'buddy'" and "I am my kid's best friend". I picked up 'kiddo' from a roommate who used it for everyone; it's been reinforced by working in schools, and now 'kiddo' means 'student, particularly one of mine'. 'Sweetheart' is endemic to a certain class of waitress and apparently shows up within a week of starting work.
