If you're in the habit of posting things to your livejournal that you do NOT want another person to see or which are incriminating, make them friends only. This won't help if one of your "friends" shows them around to people while on his/her own livejournal, but it's useful for keeping specific people from your private business. This is an issue that's come up recently for a few of my friends, so I thought the warning would be good for everyone else.

Also, if you add a lot of people to your friends list (as I do), set up a friends filter. Don't make something friends only, make it only viewable to people in a specific category. Trust me, it's worth the effort to know that your sister can't read your comments bitching about her.

I am so pissed off.

Thanks for the PSA - it's more important than people think, really.

Yeah, I'm often surprised by what people will say. I think it's easy to forget that actual people read these. I try to keep personal stuff friends-only, and really personal stuff is private.

I do the same thing! I actually don't even write in paper journals anymore, and I forget that there's at least one person from my school that reads it.

I've been thinking of setting up a friends filter, but I've been procrastinating on it. I don't think I write anything that incriminating in my journal though, and no one I know irl reads my journal anyway, so I don't particularly care. xP

Also, realize that anything on LJ is accessible by someone for the "right reasons" - for example, if X posts what seems to be a suicide note in his or her journal, X's friends can shout "help!" to the right people, and the first-responders will arrive at X's house.

All my stuff is public - if it's not something I don't care for the entire world to know, this is not the place for me to put it. I *might* set up a filter for 'people who get stuck critiquing my stories' - but that's just to spare the rest of you. And I may force y'all to read 'em, anyway.
