References to "the turnspit" meaning those dogs are in a number of fairy tales. They're mentioned in several stories in Andrew Lang's colored fairy book collection. I think they're also in Mark Twain's The Prince & the Pauper.

They are also in the very first Pern story, "Weyr Search". When Lessa is using her psychic abilities to ruin the reception and dinner for Lord Fax, one of the things she does is control the dogs who turn the roast so it's overdone on one side and undercooked on the other. Bwah-hah-hah.

"I promised my kid an Easter egg hunt and I'd want to give him an even edge."

An even edge? You want to give him an advantage, but the same one that all the other kids have? Right.

Before I pointed at it I figured that was about the turnspit dogs.

And the lobbyist, guns and money story wants me to register with the Times.

The crazy part is, this doesn't give the kids an even chance, it gives the parents one. Why the hell don't they go off and have their own Easter egg hunt and leave the kids alone?
