I think it's a robin's nest, as it looks like pictures of robin nests online do, and it had three robin-looking eggshells in it. Hatched eggshells, and empty, and no little birds inside. Once the baby birds leave the nest, they don't come back, that's the way it is, right?

That's the way it is for most birds, yes. I don't know much about the American robin (other than it's different from the European robin), but I'd expect it to behave the same way. Look for little fluffy birds with only half their feathers and not much control of their flight, hopping after their parents begging hopefully.
