What the hell am I reading to the nieces? I need to pick a chapter book, TODAY!

There's just too many books....

(And yet, and yet, and yet there's also never ENOUGH books. Funny how that works out. Any suggestions?)

How old are they? What do they like?

Kindergarten and 2nd grade this September, and just about everything so long as it isn't overly scary. Pictures preferred - but I won't read it to them unless *I* like it. Nobody read BSC books to me, I read them myself, that sort of thing.

Books have to fit my own personal filter for no casual racism (unless in the context of "this is why it's wrong"), otherwise I'd be reading Half Magic to them right now.

I should keep a running list of the books we've read, maybe I'll do that soon.

My choices for The Next Book are:

The Wizard Test (my winner, but it has some... interesting word choices for this age range)
Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians (Ana's choice, but I get the feeling Evangeline wouldn't like it much)
Sandry's Book (always a winner, but everybody has such a sad backstory!)
The Year of the Dog (the safe choice, sure to be a winner)
Owlboy (because it's OWLBOY)
The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks (ditto)
Primrose Day (meh, but they'd like it)

The original Oz books, maybe? John Bellairs, though they might be a bit scary. The Wayside School books, by Louis Sacher?

My six year old just read Bunnicula with me and LOVED it. What kid wouldn't like a book with a talking dog, a neurotic cat and a vampire bunny ;P

Home for the Howlidays is really cute and not really scary, if you can find it. I got it as a secret santa book in like 4th grade.
