Well, "the trip" refers to getting to california, as in, the car or plane or whatever you took. Now you are visiting, there's a very slight difference. "Trip" is the traveling part, "vacation" or "visiting" is the fun stuff. When you have finished with your visit, you will take another trip back to New York.
