I though the reason children weren't allowed to, like, work at their parents' store or whatever is that those are now considered child labour and illegal. Is that not right?

Most parents don't own their own business any more, sigh. I was slightly surprised when I went into this coffee place a couple of years ago and it was owned by a family and the eight-year-old (looked like) daughter took my order. That used to be normal.

Yes, there's exceptions for family businesses, because laws against children helping their own parents are simply unenforceable.

Thgere's no law against a kid going into business for herself, either. My own was always on the ball with that; she started her jewelry business out of a shoebox. She also learned early-on that the merchants at events are always in need of help, and pay well in shinies, food and garb.

The difference between her and most of her age-group is staggering, and it both annoys her and makes her sad, because they all seem so young to her. When she was 17, we were talking about how adults took her for 20-something, and she said "I'm like 17 of 200 years ago", which is about right.
