Swing becomes fing. Sweep becomes feep. Switzerland becomes Fitzeryan.

Yesterday, she asked me if I could "s'ing" her. After I confirmed that she meant swing I asked, in dismay, if she could say sweep, could say swallow, could say Switzerland. "S'eep, s'a-yo, S'itzeryan."

I suppose this is a step forward, but I didn't want her to step forward! I wanted her to keep being the cute little kid who cutely asked me to fing her!

I've lately heard her saying "lollipop" instead of "yayipop" and "byoo" or "blue" instead of "b'ue", and - tragedy of tragedies! - "beyieve" instead of "abeev".

She clearly hasn't read and understood the memo: SHE IS NOT ALLOWED TO GET ANY OLDER. I tell her that, every day, but she laughs! She seems to think - and has even said as much! - that just because she "can't help it" that's an excuse for growing up! Not on my watch.

I'm pretty sure I share these every time you post this way, but, anyway: Faith, now 9, said "pan-you" and "fone-ya" for piano and Fiona. Abby, now 8, said all her Rs as Ys. Sweatee was sweater, her brother Gilbert was Gilbeet, and my favorite, regular became yeguley.

I do. It's mitigated by the fact that there are still babies about talking cutely.

Heh, on a whim I decided to run egrep ".+sw.+" /usr/share/dict/words and found a few words you might try: "crosswalk", "crossword", "glassware", "glasswork", "sideswipe", "sportswear"...

(Alas, a lot of the words were compounds where the "s" is pronounced like a "z", or derivatives of "answer". But all the ones I listed above look good.)

Heh, cry me a river; it just really struck me yesterday that I'm no longer the parent of a teenager.

She was an extraordinarily good teenager too, not like some, that their parents can't wait till they grow up and clear out. And now she's this quietly-elegant 20-something, all in her blazer and heels and all, planning to move to Canada after she gets her Associate's Degree. CANADA. It's this whole other country. Granted, not so far away as some, but still, sheesh!

Life goes so fast, and we can't stop it nor slow it down; the only thing we can do is savor it while we've got the chance.
