I hate it at times, but I love it.

Most of the families here have been here two, three generations. Even if they weren't on this block they've been nearby - and when their kids grow up, either they stay put or they move only a little bit away. It's great.

It also means that even without actually going out and gossiping, you have no choice but to know all the dirt that's on about everybody. (Funnily enough, everybody is well acquainted with this rule and is presumably reluctant to have it apply to themselves, which means that the most fascinating information I have from anybody comes from people outside the neighborhood. But I digress.)

Now, my block has more than its share of overly loud people. It happens. (The worst are my next-door neighbors, but various other neighbors have realized that they have no choice but to live there, which means that if you go out and tell them to knock it off they will (hilariously whining that they weren't that loud) because they cannot afford to piss off the whole block. This resulted recently in the actual neighbor shushing his friends at midnight. I LOL'd.) And as it's the summer, the folks down the block with a whole lot for their yard are out playing music every weekend.

Well, that's what summer's for. My across-the-street neighbor, let's call him Butters (because that's his dog's name and I don't know his) apparently took umbrage at this and came outside to yell at them from down the block that they have "no respect for the Lord and the neighbors". (They're not being that loud, and besides, it's 4:45. It's not like anybody's trying to get some sleep.)

This is sadly ironic in light of the fact that a. he comes out once a week at night to scream incoherently at somebody or other and b. I know for a fact he's been fired from his job as pastor at a local church because he embezzled a serious amount of money (postulated to be because of a drug addiction). The church kicked him to the curb and hired a dumpster to take away all his stuff from the attached house and had a major shitfit over this. EVERYbody knows this - or if they don't know the details they certainly know something happened, his stuff was all over the lawn of the church for a week!

So I feel bad for him, because it's not like addiction is supposed to be an easy thing to shake off, but I don't know what he's thinking. He must know everybody knows (or suspects) what happened... and even if he's not addicted to anything, that's what everybody thinks. You'd think he'd try to be a little less appearing-to-be-hypocritical.
