Well, *this* is depressing.

The GAO (Government Accountability Office) has issued a report saying that there is widespread (alleged) abuse against disabled kids in schools.

Depressing, but not exactly surprising. Be sure to read the last sentence - they examined ten restraint and seclusion cases where the educator (and I use that term loosely) was found culpable in some way. Five out of ten of those cases? The staff is still employed.

The federal govt is getting more strict with use of restraints in medical settings too (nursing homes, hospitals, ERs, etc.) so we're passing that strictness down to our contractors to make sure they have policies in place, all their providers know about them, and patients get their statement about a right to be free from restraint in their member handbooks.

Unfortunately, we can't expect children to get a handbook and know they shouldn't have to be held down or isolated like that, but hopefully this GAO report will trickle down to schools changing their policies or getting additional training on it.

Even if they are informed of their rights, and the teachers know they've been informed of their rights, that's no guarantee that the teachers still won't break the rules. (Been there, done that, though thankfully over something less crucial and important. JUST (as we say, "just") the PoA.)
