We just finished Pippi Longstocking.
Apr. 11th, 2009 09:14 pmMonday we're starting The Worst Witch - apparently there are six books in that series, not just four, did you know? - but what should we read after that? Decisions, decisions - go ahead and suggest something!
Off and on we're talking about literary technique. Kinda. As in "Did you see how they say that? They repeated it three times. I wonder why. What do you think?" or (since we do still read a lot of picture books) "Look at that, why did they do these letters really small, and these letters really big and curly?" Which Ana is soaking up right now.

Re: Some of my favorites
Date: 2009-04-14 01:13 am (UTC)I'll note that I'm re-reading a lot of my old favorites for subtle racism, that being harder to explain than overt racism... a lot of the older books I'm shelving for later. I just... don't want to deal with it right now. (Oh god, I was so irked at Half Magic! A whole, impossible to avoid scene, and it's just an ugly, ugly cariacature (both in writing and illustration) of Arabs.)

Date: 2009-04-13 08:39 pm (UTC)But I did tell Ana that I nearly nicknamed her Pippi! Evangeline was shocked and not at all happy. The scene where Pippi destroys the coffee party really made an impression on her. "You CAN'T call Ana Pippi because Pippi was WRONG at the PARTY and she did all the BAD things!"
