On money.

Ana learned a valuable - if traumatic - lesson today.

See, her tooth fairy money has simply been burning a hole in her pocket since she got it, and today she happened to have it with her. AND SHE WANTED TO SPEND IT.

I suggested saving it for that doll she still wants, but as she couldn't both save and spend at the same time, she wanted to get a treat... preferably an *edible* treat.

So, on the way home from the library we stopped in at Subway and got some cookies and juice. (I paid for the juice, but I made asked Ana to get enough cookies to share around. Told her she could keep her chips without sharing, though.)

In order to have enough cookies to share, we needed at least three. Ana was a little annoyed at this, and said she wanted to get more. Maybe seven.

"Well, sure, it's your money, you can get seven if you like. But it'll cost more, you know."
"It'll cost more?"
"Yeah...?"
"BUT WHY???????"
"Because... you're... getting more cookies?"
"BUT I DON'T WANT IT TO COST MORE!"
"... Tough."

She decided to only get three cookies after all. Honestly, the shock and horror of realizing that more things = more money! My god!

Evangeline, for her part, likes to play store. And by "play store" I mean - as in all her pretend games - she says her lines, then she tells me my responses. (Sure, she can act! But what she really wants to do is rule the world direct. Clearly.)

So she pretends I'm the cashier (the "store"), comes up, goes through the rigamarole of buying something, and pretends to pay. And... then she just stands there with her hand out.

Me: Yes...?
Her: I want my money!
Me: No, you give *me* money.
Her: No! I am not the store, you are the store!
Me: Yes, and you buy things from stores.
Her: Yeah, but you get money from the store.
Me: ... uh no. No, you don't.
Her: Yes you do! The store gives you money!

Like my uncle Gabriel before her, when he was a child, she clearly thinks that getting change = getting money. Would that it were so simple!

*laughs* I remember my own first traumatic money lesson. I think I was probably three or four when I finally got a handle on different coins having different values and realised that all the times my older sister had traded me two copper monies for one big silver money were not in fact bargains in my favour.
