Date: 2008-10-30 07:43 pm (UTC)There are other special cases. Usually when the mother must be on a medication, some of which will come through in the breast milk.
I just mention it because for people who shouldn't breastfeed (which is the exception, but does happen) they often get a lot of crap from random strangers telling them they're being bad to their kids, even though they are doing what is best for their kids.
Also, it's not always because of the mother's breast milk. Children with galactisemia (I think I spelled that right, but it's a condition where galactose and lactose are toxic to the person) any breast milk or any milk products are harmful, so even giving someone else's breastmilk is out.
I'm totally in favor of breastfeeding in most cases; it's repeatedly been shown to be best for children in general or at worst, just as good. But it's good to remember that special cases exist, just so people don't go rabidly pro-breastfeeding in specific cases where they don't know the details.
