I've seen high schoolers take Bay Area Rapid Transit to school around here too. What surprises me is not that they do it (because it is after all very convenient, cheap, and reliable) but how far they go. Maybe it's because I grew up somewhere else, but I can't imagine going to school ten miles from where you live.

With stops, 15-25 minutes depending on which part of the line.

It's not that the travel time seems excessive. It's more like I'm so used to there being the proper school within a mile or two. Maybe five at the most, but then there would be buses. And with how heavily populated it is around here it just kind of weirds me out that the distances they're traveling don't take them to an entirely different school district.

My mother was born in 1943. She told me that her school issued her a bus pass which allowed her to ride the public buses to and from school for free. That was the expected method of transportation for school children in her city.
