Because I didn't have enough to worry about, yeah?

I have no idea how reliable this information is, not really knowing British press and which is good and which isn't. I'm hoping it's not reliable, because I let the baby play with my cell phone occasionally, and Ana, and... oy.

(AND THE BEES? WHO WILL THINK OF THE BEES I MAY HAVE MURDERED????? ALL THE OCEANS WILL NEVER WASH THEIR BEE BLOOD OFF MY HANDS!!!!!)

The Independent is a proper, reputable newspaper, which is generally trustworthy. Not that that means that they're necessarily right, but still.

Hmmm. Cell phones have been around for quite a while now, so why have the bees only just now gottten around to freaking out? My understanding is that the colony collapse is an abruptly new phenonenom. It's not as if it has been gradually been getting worse over the years.

Also, did I not read somewhere that colony collapse diosorder (what an ugly name for this) had been observed somewhere some decades ago, or am I misremembering something?

Yes, it's happened before. Seems like the cycle is about every thirty years since the 1890s. What's different this time is how widespread it is. Something weird is definitely happening, but whether cell phones are to blame is another question.

(How do I know so much about bees? I listen to way too much NPR.)

Any time, m'dear. I know you love the bees so.

As for the source... I don't know anything about that publication, but I did find this document (http://www.bienenarchiv.de/forschung/2004_lernprozesse/Electromagnetic%20Exposure_Learning%20Processes.doc.pdf) (word doc) online.

That fits oddly well with all the bee-mythology (about telling important news to the bees so they'll pass it on, and so forth). Our mass-communication disrupted theirs? Creepy.

Slashdot has some arguments against the theory that make sense--eg., Europe's had widespread cellphone usage longer and has a higher density of people (+phones) than the U.S., so if cellphones were to blame, logically this would be operating in the opposite direction.

I prefer the quantum bee theory, personally.
