Does the "squeek squeek" bats purportedly make ever sound more like "skiffle skiffle"? If not, what the heck was that flying above my head yesternight that was grey (probably - y'know, it was dark out) and looked bat-like and went, uh, skiffle skiffle as it flew?

Was it carrying a washboard? It could have been promoting a flying skiffle band.

... More seriously, I have no idea. Oddly, though I have made bats intentionally fly at me, I don't recall them making much in the way of noise.

Do you know what kinds of bats are in your area? It seems there are some bat call websites that have sound files you can listen to online. If you know the species, that might help.

... I am going to need to cave and get a paid account. I forgot to mention that it seemed a little early for bats to up and about right now. I'm not sure how many insects are around for them to eat at the moment.

All my knowledge of bats is based on an exhibit at the Natural History museum here (you go into a cave that has strategically placed video monitors showing them) but I'd say they both go "squeak" and "skiffle." And sometimes something like "squee-iffle."

What circumstances dictate which sound they make, and whether or not it was a bat you saw, I have no idea.
