Time for your monthly TMI!
Feb. 1st, 2008 06:30 pmI got my period today, as you can probably guess :)
Learned something new and cool about my cloth pads. You see, I've been using sponges as well the first few days (I just bleed that much) so there's less chance of leakage. And I'd noticed that when I went to the bathroom, the blood in the pads that seeped through was pretty... watered down, not like I'd expect. I'm used to blood on disposable pads looking darker, and much more visible. I assumed this was an effect from the sponge.
Until today.
I realized after a bout of coughing (more on that later) that I needed to rinse out my sponge, so I went to the bathroom to do that, and saw that the blood on the pad was very visible, very dark. Okay, well, it's a pad. (Specifically, it's a red and white checkered pad with ants all over it. Love it.) I was a bit perturbed that it'd be stained the very first time I wore it, but what do I expect? I use it to keep blood from getting on my clothing, that's what it's for!
When I went to the bathroom to pee an hour later, I glanced down - and I couldn't see the blood. The only sign of it was a very faint browning right where it had been. On a pad that's partially white, I couldn't see the blood.
Clearly, whatever they use inside these pads to absorb the blood (cotton, apparently - and I've heard hemp and bamboo, which some people use, are a heck of a lot more absorbant!) really does the trick. It looked like an old stain that had been washed already.
I'd already noticed, when I started rinsing my pads last cycle (instead of starting a load of laundry for each of them), that more blood came out than I would have expected, but I figured it was a case of my perceptions being odd! This is not what I thought was happening!
And without chemicals, too, or packed cotton that falls apart when you sit on it. I'm in heaven here.
Picnic Ants, Tye-dye, Fishies, Dino Robos, Flames... list incomplete due to illness.
