Oh no.

Angelique has recently really glommed onto this toy moose at the museum. I am *certain* that it must have originally been a moose another child left there, but by now it's been there so long that... well... it's not anymore. She calls it Moosey. She carries it everywhere. She's asked the staff if she can take it home (and they said no, of course). So instead she tries hiding it so that she can get it back first thing when we show up again.

I caved, found out which sort of Beanie Baby it turned out to be, and ordered her a new one without telling her.

Got it in the mail. Small problem. This moose comes in big and small sizes - and I got the wrong moose.

Well, I snuck in and stuck it on her hammock anyway, and tried again.

This time, I used a tape measure, and I think I've picked the correct moose. Only thing is that it's not being made anymore, so I had to order it from a private seller on Amazon.

The guy said this in his description:

GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC! pcalton has been buying, collecting and selling TY Buddies since the beginning. ~~~ This Buddie was purchased NEW from an AUTHORIZED Ty Dealer, then CAREFULLY wrapped with PROTECTIVE and HIGH QUALITY acid-free tissue, and stored in SMOKE-FREE environment. ABSOLUTELY NEW, never played with and the Heart Tag is protected with Acid-free tag protector; SHINNY NEW SHEEN, soft, cuddly and totally cute! ~~~ Shipped in acid-free tissue. WE GUARANTEE YOUR SATISFACTION!!!

It's all very reassuring (almost as much as his approval rating), but it does make me feel slightly guilty that all that effort and all those capital letters are just going to be up and given to a four year old child.

Oh well. Needs must, and all that.

It reminds me of that moment on the Simpsons when Bart and Liisa have superheroic powers and are fighting Comic Book Guy. He takes a Darth Maul lightsaber out of its packaging and everyone, including himself, belatedly, gasps at the sacrilege.

A toy's a toy--here's hoping this one makes her happy!

My grandma collected those beanies and lovingly put the little heart protector plastic things on them, and gave most of her collection to the kids...

and we of course immediately pull the heart tags off, and one cat got left at the zoo (Maylie was upset about that), and they get dumped in the toy box...

grandma doesn't ask, we don' tell. Grandma doesn't come down to visit (it's MY grandma, their great-grandma) so she'll never know.

My brother is in the collectibles business. He buys and sells whatever people are interested in buying and selling. When beanies were hot, he did beanies. I have Radar from that, because I really liked it. It was the older black bat that looked less friendly than Batty they replaced it with (a brown bat), but I thought it was neat.

That ad reads exactly like something he'd write, and he can write just fine if he wants to. But he writes ads like that because they work. That's the business. And he wouldn't give a damn what you did with it. He'd probably be glad to know someone wasn't taking the collectible overly seriously and was actually enjoying it. But he's going to put all the info some people will want, because it won't lose you a sale to someone who doesn't care, but not putting it may cost one to someone who does. And good writing apparently doesn't work as well, because people prefer to buy from people who seem like smaller sellers, just folks, not someone who is doing this as their primary way of making a living. Even though often the person doing it for a living is very organized and has a strong reason to maintain their ebay rating.

And when you become typical and representative...

But a lot of individual people are selling to help get a little extra cash to make ends meet. It's not like it's clear how well off someone is or how much they need your sale from ebay.

Actually, my brother owns his house, although he probably has a mortgage. He needs money to pay for the vastly expensive medications he takes since his insurance has a yearly cap. His monthly meds cost him far more than my monthly rent. Also more than I've ever made in a month, so he must be pretty good at his job. But then, he always was very clever and perceptive.
