Here I am, bopping along, as they say, going here and there and everywhere, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I am implored to view a video (and spam all my friends with it) so that $.49 (not even a whole half-a-dollar, just so you know) can be donated to everybody's favorite autism organization that speaks for... uh... something.

Well, fuck that shit.

Which is basically what I said, but slightly nicer. Not much nicer - for unrelated reasons, I'm in a pretty sucky mood this week. (And I don't mean PMS, thanks.) (And if you're a member - don't run to comment, naturally.)

I can't even click the link to mock/cry over the video (at least, not without supporting them, and if I wanted to do that, I'd find a more useful way, thanks), but that's probably just as well. Judging from the comments, it makes ye olde autism = cancer comparison, so I doubt I'm missing much.

Edit: Incidentally, didn't That Group have some sort of... funding scandal or something a little while ago?

Edit again: Autism Speaks has done a lot of very iffy ethical things.

Among other things, their senior vice president has gone on record, in a video she produced, as saying, in front of her autistic child that she had thought about killing herself and that child, and that the only thing that stopped her was thoughts of her normal child.

This is abhorrant. Already, autistic children (as well as those with other disabilities) are killed, every year, by their parents, because they're disabled. And already, when autistic children (and other disabled children) are murdered, their parents suffer lighter penalties than the murderers of non-disabled children. Organizations such as Autism Speaks, by their very actions and comments, only promote the hateful and offensive attitudes that make this possible.

That organization does not speak or act ethically. As an autistic individual, I would not support them, period. Find another video to watch, another place to spend your money.

It took me a few minutes to type up, I was trying to be somewhat nicer than I felt.
