I happen to love cilantro, but I understand that to some people, it doesn't taste like cilantro-y goodness, but like soapy soapness.

Interestingly enough, a while back I was talking to somebody who is into healthy eating, and I mentioned guacamole, and she goes "I can't eat avocado, it tastes like soap to me!"

This reminded me of cilantro, so I inquired, and she confirmed that yes, cilantro also tastes soapy to her. Then I explained that it's a genetic quirk, and that it doesn't taste that way to everybody, which probably caused her life to make sense again if she'd been going around thinking everybody tasted it the same, but only she didn't like the flavor.

This is weird though, and I don't really know what to make of it: I got some Pineapple Lime Cilantro lip balm from My Lip Stuff, and that kinda tastes soapy to me, though none of the other balms do.

Correct, at least not as far as I know. I've never had it on its own, but I've had many delicious salsas that had cilantro in them.

I've never had those two things, but I had vodka truffles and those taste like soap to me. D: Blech.

I think gin (and martinis :P) tastes like soap. And I don't like alvacado but it doesn't taste like soap. I love cilantro though. *munches cilantro/lime/corn/blackbean/cheese dip...*

Cilantro is the worst thing I've ever tasted. I have a t-shirt from ihatecilantro.com.

Very many aloe vera tasting things taste like soap, but that's probably because many soapy things smell like aloe vera.

It's not very strong, but I can definitely smell aloe vera.

Nothing has a soapy taste to me (other than, you know, soap) but my husband is totally repelled by cilantro and cumin. Not sure if the cumin tastes like soap, but he says the cilantro does. He likes avocado just fine.

Actually, ONE thing tastes like soap to me, like generic detergent. I don't know why, but grilled mushrooms from a restaurant I otherwise love always seems to taste vaguely like detergent. I normally love mushrooms and the other food there is yummy, so it's disturbing.

I HATE CILANTRO. The stuff gives me a headache. :-( So do onions. Cilantro plants also give me headaches; I found this out because Mom grows it as an herb, and I had to ask her what the horrendous headachy smell was...and then had to track it down *gack!* to point it out to her. I don't get it, though - it (and onions) can be in Tex-Mex salsa in small amounts and not bother me. Anything else is totally inedible.

Yes, I hate the soapy cilantro, and I can stand low levels of it but some restaurants just go to town with the stuff.

Lavender also tastes soapy to me. Which is sad, because I love the way it smells and a friend of mine makes a killer lavender shortbread.

I know I'm late on this, but I meant to comment earlier. For me cilantro does not taste like soap, but I find it to have a zingy bitter flavor that I cannot stand. It's awful. On the other hand, my boyfriend claims that cilantro tastes like soap.

As for avocado, it's flavor is okay, but I am not fond of the texture. Usually it is just too mushy for me to handle eating (I don't like mushy or mealy foods, like grits or oatmeal or baby food).
