The Diane Rehm show on NPR had a whole hour on the bee issue yesterday. You can listen to it here (http://www.wamu.org/programs/dr/07/05/10.php#13178). I only got to hear the first half. They talked about the mites and about the stresses on the colonies, particularly as the hives get moved around to pollinate various crops. They pretty much disproved the cell phone theory. I don't know if they discussed the phenomenon in Europe. (It's my understanding that it's happening there too.)
They said this kind of thing has been going on since the 80s, and now it's reached a kind of tipping point, though they have yet to figure out what has caused it to tip. I had thought this was a new, sudden event. Anyway, a very good program -- if you can call it "good" when the bees are in such a terrible state.
