I barely did any work the past two weeks because of Passover and whatnot - Jenn had four days off, 'dul took a day off (probably not because of Passover, but whatever), it was great. Jenn, of course, scared people by going places with her own kids and actually, y'know, being their mom. Some of them related the story to me later how they were confused. I was nice, I didn't point out to them that not only had I heard it from Jenn, but that it happens all the time. (Seriously. My mei-tai has "aunt" embroidered on it, but the font is teensy and nobody ever seems to notice it anyway.)

So, of course, the kid is reluctant to sign any words starting with the letter B, because she can say ba, and no matter that it takes us a minute to figure out which ba she means, she'd rather say it than sign it.

But other words are fair game for signing, I guess. I've spent months trying to get this girl to sign (or say, whatever) "apple". Today, I wasn't even talking to her when I suggested she and Ana could have an apple for a snack, and she just about twisted her hand off signing it for me! She also nearly threw herself off a short staircase - she'd pulled me over there so we could sit and listen to music together, and happened to see that a nearby door had a fish on it. A FISH! WOW! So, naturally, she had to sign fish and go "Da!" a lot to make sure I got the point. FISHFISHFISHFISHDOYOUSEETHECOOLFISHONTHEDOOROHILOVEFISHFISHFISH!!!!!!! (Similar things happened when she got stickers on Easter. I picked out fish stickers for her, butterfly ones for Ana - she opened that egg, saw those fish, and squealed and signed her little hands off. It was cute.)

Ana only ever will eat my trailmix if we're not around her friends. Then she wants to eat what they have, which is a pity, because *much* of the time, what they have is... well, I don't necessarily see eye to eye with their adults on the care and feeding of children, and anyway, I don't have the authority to give the kids treats all the time. (Not all the kids are like this all the time - some of her friends eat quite healthily. Regardless, I don't want her to mooch.)

But the rest of the time, she loves this stuff. And I don't blame her, it's nummy. It's zante currants (tiny raisins), hulled and lightly salted sunfower seeds, and (optional) flaked coconut. And it's delicious. Currently it also has roasted soybeans in it because I have to use it up.

So she decided she wanted some today. But I'm saving it for tomorrow, we don't have that much. Ana heard this and set off to find it. Alas, she was thwarted halfway down the hall...

"Connie? Where's the pantry?"

Yes, she's been her months now and only just realized that her apartment doesn't have a real pantry. But if it did have a pantry, that's where the trailmix would be stored, yes. (It has shelving that functions as a pantry, but I didn't point that out to Ana. My goal was not to encourage her to find and eat my trailmix.)
