Throat singing???

What struck me, oddly, is not how the man on the left (as I'm looking at it) is making two sounds at once, nor how he sounds like a flute - but rather, how familiar those chords sound on the stringed instrument, whatever it is.

That instrument, which I'm assuming to be the doshpulur, looks and sounds a lot like the Japanese shamisen.
There is also a rock Opera called "Khan!" which has a lot of traditional elements, including throat singing.
