Help?

Elise gets has to read So You Want to Be a Wizard for class.

And so far, not a fan. But she hasn't gotten to the wizardry part yet. (Plus, she's always dragging her feet when it comes to that class. Yeah, her teacher doesn't like her (though my estimation of the woman has gone up with this recent assignment), but sometimes I suspect I wouldn't like Elise much either if she didn't want to do any work in my class. At any rate, not liking the teacher isn't a good reason to not do the work, whatever she thinks.)

So I told her, in exasperation, that I'd find her some fanfic once she made it through the prologue. (I'm to blame for introducing her to the wide world of fanfic. If she never finds the -dom, that's maybe just as well.)

But! I don't happen to know, off the top of my head, of any good fics - certainly not any that will make sense if she hasn't read at least the original three books.

So, uh - help? I'll post in the appropriate comm as well.

It's too bad she can't write her own yet.

Exactly. Would that work as incentive for the next book? Or maybe for this one, depending on the fanfic you find?

Oooh um.

My fic is probably all either too involved with the last few books, or too crossover/RPG related. If she likes Pirates of the Carribbean and makes it through Deep Wizardry, though, I'll shamelessly self-pimp this.

A glance over [livejournal.com profile] myriadwords reveals much the same, I'm afraid. :\ I'd be willing to take on a challenge and write some SYWtBaW-specific fic, though!

(I can't believe she gets to read YW for a class. When I wanted to read YW for a class, I had to design a 10-page analysis to get away with it! ;))

Slash OK? Because off the top of my head, An Unwilling Heart (http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/30/anunwilling.html) by [livejournal.com profile] cyphomandra doesn't need anything more than SYWTBAW to be comprehensible, and it's awesome. Carl backstory leading into Tom/Carl.

Otherwise... yeah, it's really tough to get anything that's not spoilery past the end of SYWTBAW - there's lots of DW stuff, if she sticks it out that long. Do take a browse through the [livejournal.com profile] myriadwords memories though, there are several good pieces in there and some of them might not be too spoilery.

I have a friend who writes insane amounts of HP fanfiction without having ever read a book or watched a movie. She just bases them on all the other fics she's read and occasional fact-checking with her friend who has read them.

AHHHH HAA Haaa haa haaaa haaaa!!!!!!!!!! That is TOO funny... When I got home today, Elie looked up from reading that book, held it up to me, and said "Connie is making me read this." My response of course was "WOW that's great, it's a fabulous book, you will LOVE it! In fact, I was *just* talking to someone about that book on the ferry, not five minutes ago!" I was quite happy and excited LOL and popped in again to add what an amazing book it is. ROFL I had no idea she was not happy to be reading it LOL, I'm sure my response was not quite wht she was expecting!

*cracks up* Well, if slash is okay, I have some Tom/Carl! (I wasn't sure. When I was 13, my friends thought slash fic was weeeird).

A YW fic for an in-progress reader, then, coming up. :)

Nope, she's gonna get a sex change just for that purpose, and all because you exposed her to slash fics.

And...she was stunned I presume because she does not like the book...that surely is impossible, isn't it?

Did this ever get done? I'm only up to AWAbroad (half way through) and I'm so taken with this all that I want some fanfic toooooo dammit. And stuff you don't need to have read WAW to understand!

Not as such, because I basically suck. >.>

However! I have a couple other one-shots/crossovers that can be probably be enjoyed with just the first few books under your belt. Like Pirates of the Caribbean/YW, Nita donating blood, and Spider Robinson's Callahan's Place/YW.

Check out [livejournal.com profile] myriadwords, as well -- people are pretty good about labeling for spoilers, and there are a number of good stories that are time-non-specific or early in the series.

Hope that helps! I'm always happy to encourage fandom. :D
