So here I am the other day, and Ana is pretending to tuck me into bed.

I mean, she is tucking me into bed, and pretending that she's putting me to sleep.

And in my role as "Ana", I ask for a story. And she goes "NO!", turns around to leave... and hits me in the face.

Now, I thought this was an accident. Clearly, she could not have just hit me, while I was pretending to nap. That's so uncool, it's not even funny.

So I go "Ana!" meaning to continue with "Be more careful!"

But do you know what she says?

Go on, guess.

...

That's right!

"I didn't hit you, Connie!"



I believe I speak for everyone when I say BUSTED!

It's bad enough that she hit me. In the face. Bad enough she lied about it. But to lie so badly?


That's simply unacceptable. If you can't lie well, you must learn to not lie at all. There's no point in going around being a bad liar, it just gets you into trouble. Best to fess up at the start or keep your mouth shut, I always say.

(Naturally, I didn't explain this to Ana - I gave her a flat-out time-out for the lying and hitting. She doesn't need me to teach her to avoid getting in trouble.)

She didn't hit me hard, anyway, so I wasn't really upset. Well. I mean, I was, and at the lying, the insultingly bad lying - but really, I was in a position to see the funny side of it.

I think 3 yr olds like making stuff up, and they aren't lying in order to not get in trouble (which is usually the intent of lying)...

Like "Maylie, what'd you do today?"

Maylie: "I went to COSI and I ate macaroni and cheese, and colored!"

Me: "ummm Maylie, you didn't do ANY of that!"

Although sometimes it doesn't occur to her to lie or make something up... like when she bit Greg on the back (and I was sitting right there).

Me: Maylie, you BIT Greg!!

Maylie: yeah.... I'm sorry.

Me: WHY did you bite Greg?

Maylie: He's on your lap!

Me: What? No, WHY did you bite him? What did he do?

Maylie: nothing...

I agree - in general. I have nothing against her making stuff up.

But this was definitely a lie. And it wasn't the first time, or I would have given her the benefit of the doubt. Earlier that day, she had kicked her sister, and then before I could even finish saying her name, went "I didn't kick Evangeline!"

I don't know if she was lying to stay out of trouble, or trying to report events the way they should have happened, or what, but she can't do that.

AND she can't kick her sister. Or hit me.

She would have gotten a time out for that first one no matter what.

I just can't wait until Greg is more easily punished, because he doesn't understand cause/effect do something bad/get punished, and yet redirection does NOT work for him anymore. He instigates things, laughs when you tell him no, runs back to it when you pull him away, etc. hits his sister or pulls her hair and thinks it's funny even if she's crying...

I'm just sitting there like, Ana? You're digging yourself in deeper. I am trying to find a way for you to behave and avoid the time-out, but it only works if you work with me, honey.

I remember when I was younger I would get punished every single time I lied. And I would be punished more than one way if I lied more than once.

It was a lesson to learn not to lie.

I remember that too. My dad believed in spanking as punishment (probably still does, there's a conversation about my child rearing I'm not eager to have) so any time we lied about something we did wrong we got 7 extra spankings. Though really, I think that just taught us to lie better.
