An editorial on children and food and ads, from [livejournal.com profile] alternet.

Comments, as always, are interesting to read in [livejournal.com profile] alternet articles.

I did pretty much the same thing. Meredith wasn't allowed to watch commercial TV, only the two PBS stations we get in this area, so she wasn't exposed to commercials either. She had a subscription to Zillions (http://www.zillions.org/) magazine (the kids' version of Consumer Reports) and read it eagerly. She became a vegetarian when she was 13, and still is.

But she also became a junk food junkie, and still is. As the comments show, some kids raised in our normal commercial culture become very healthy eaters, while others raised without exposure to ads become junk food eaters. I certainly think Meredith got a healthier start in life by having snacks like yogurt or carrot sticks instead of Twinkies and potato chips, and drinking milk with her meals instead of soda -- but unfortunately it didn't stick once she got old enough to be making independent food choices. =sigh=
