Oh, I don't think the solution is all that bad. I don't *like* it, but I understand the need to support oneself. What's going to be bad is every user in the world whining that they don't like ads, so why do they have to see them. Plus, of course, the concept of ads on LiveJournal. Ugh.

I continue to think that LiveJournal could make a bundle selling features individually, so long as you had to pay a certain amount up-front. So, say, you couldn't buy two months of an extra 10 (or 50, or 100) userpics as a free user, you'd have to buy a whole year's worth. (That was the problem that was explained to me before, right, that for small amounts of money it would cost more than it'd earn?)

Got Ana a library card today. Cunningly set it so that she can check out kid's books *and* non-kid's books. Mwa ha ha ha ha!

Huh.

I think it's an interesting idea. And I was completely okay with it until I got to the part where it explained that even if I don't enable them I might still see them. Now I'm mildly worried.

The thing is, I'm fine with the basic features. One of the major reasons I don't have a paid account is that I wouldn't use it.

I liked GJ, where I could disable the ads. It was sneaky and hidden, but I could do it.

Now, too bad GJ was a mess of busy coding....

I'm all for it. I want some of the paid account features, but right now the wallet just isn't going to let me.

I hope Ana has fun with her new library card. I never used mine much as a kid, I preferred to have the books for longer than a week.

You know, this is how things get started... first they said NEVER ads. Now they say "well, we can have ads, but only if you opt in!" Once they get used to having that money, if revenue goes down for whatever reason (people quit spending $25/yr for the paid acct?), they might push ads further. I dunno, it's like getting your foot in the door for one idea and then pushing the idea all the way later. The whole reason i LIKE LJ is because of no ads, I can't stand Myspace.

We'll see how this goes...
