No matter. It's a nice list on How to Prevent Rape. Very useful!

I will, however, say that you should never leave your drink unattended, and should, in fact, drink only from a hip flask. Not because you should have to do this, but because I can't pass up a chance to shout CONSTANT VIGILANCE! like that.

CONSTANT VIGILANCE!

Thank you.

Oh, and if you actually needed the list I linked to, because that information is brand new to you? You're creeping me out.

Hip flask? DEFINITELY.

[livejournal.com profile] alchemia has pointed out that "Don't simply tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape" is dangerous, and I agree with her - much as I understand the writer's intention (do not imply that women need to act a certain way to avoid rape, and if they deviate from it then they "deserve" it) the fact remains that knowledge of how to avoid dangerous situations is always helpful (like "always carry your drink and never accept a new one from a stranger" - in a perfect world we wouldn't need to, but it's not and we do). She also points out how karate lessons are a good idea for everyone ;)

Did you know about the Haidl "pool cue rape" case? If not, have a look at this article (be warned, it's shocking): http://www.ocweekly.com/ink/04/35/moxley-exclusive.php
The latest news I can find on it is that those teenagers have been convicted, and that the judge is deliberating on whether to sentence them as juveniles or adults. Wherever they go, I hope that they too get to be on intimate terms with a pool cue.

i have often walked female friends home because they felt unsafe otherwise.

during second year, there was a serial rapist in the area around our residential college. the guy didn't try to excuse what he'd done. he simply claimed that the women had consented. an unconscious person cannot consent can they? he was convicted.

i have sat on a jury for a rape case. very unpleasant, for everyone.

our federal government has a campaign at the moment making it clear that violence of any kind against women is unacceptable and a criminal offence.

but complainants still fear cross-examination, and having to face their abuser. our courts have been trying to make the process less distressing for the victims, while also ensuring that certain interest groups are satisfied that the process does not "make it too easy" for women to accuse men ...

the reporting of male-male rape is still a big problem. adn we have had complaints of female- male rape and female-female rape. but i've been out of the system for too long to know what the details or outcomes were.

You should only drink from a hip flask because hip flasks are way cool.

I seriously can't buy the "don't accept drinks from strangers." I mean, c'mon. The bartender's a stranger!

But you can see the bartender pouring your drink. If someone brings one up to you, they could have spiked it and you'd never know. Until you met the consequences. It's just about keeping an eye on your drink. Similarly, you don't leave your drink unattended because again it could be spiked in your absence.
