I forget who I grabbed this from...

No matter. It's a nice list on How to Prevent Rape. Very useful!
I will, however, say that you should never leave your drink unattended, and should, in fact, drink only from a hip flask. Not because you should have to do this, but because I can't pass up a chance to shout CONSTANT VIGILANCE! like that.
CONSTANT VIGILANCE!
Thank you.
Oh, and if you actually needed the list I linked to, because that information is brand new to you? You're creeping me out.

Date: 2005-11-30 02:02 pm (UTC)Did you know about the Haidl "pool cue rape" case? If not, have a look at this article (be warned, it's shocking): http://www.ocweekly.com/ink/04/35/moxley-exclusive.php
The latest news I can find on it is that those teenagers have been convicted, and that the judge is deliberating on whether to sentence them as juveniles or adults. Wherever they go, I hope that they too get to be on intimate terms with a pool cue.

As for your main point - I agree. We shouldn't have to do a lot of things that we do, and that goes for everyone. I should be able to leave my front door unlocked, but I don't. However, it's nice to see another list of arguments to this thing, for a change.

Date: 2005-11-30 02:48 pm (UTC)during second year, there was a serial rapist in the area around our residential college. the guy didn't try to excuse what he'd done. he simply claimed that the women had consented. an unconscious person cannot consent can they? he was convicted.
i have sat on a jury for a rape case. very unpleasant, for everyone.
our federal government has a campaign at the moment making it clear that violence of any kind against women is unacceptable and a criminal offence.
but complainants still fear cross-examination, and having to face their abuser. our courts have been trying to make the process less distressing for the victims, while also ensuring that
certain interest groups are satisfied thatthe process does not "make it too easy" for women to accuse men ...the reporting of male-male rape is still a big problem. adn we have had complaints of female- male rape and female-female rape. but i've been out of the system for too long to know what the details or outcomes were.

Date: 2006-01-10 01:00 am (UTC)A lot has been said about how to prevent rape. Women should learn self-defense. Women should lock themselves in their houses after dark. Women shouldn't have long hair and women shouldn't wear short skirts. Women shouldn't leave drinks unattended. Fuck, they shouldn't dare to get drunk at all.
Instead of that bullshit, how about:
If a woman is drunk, don't rape her.
If a woman is walking alone at night, don't rape her.
If a women is drugged and unconscious, don't rape her.
If a woman is wearing a short skirt, don't rape her.
If a woman is jogging in a park at 5 am, don't rape her.
If a woman looks like your ex-girlfriend you're still hung up on, don't rape her.
If a woman is asleep in her bed, don't rape her.
If a woman is asleep in your bed, don't rape her.
If a woman is doing her laundry, don't rape her.
If a woman is in a coma, don't rape her.
If a woman changes her mind in the middle of or about a particular activity, don't rape her.
If a woman has repeatedly refused a certain activity, don't rape her.
If a woman is not yet a woman, but a child, don't rape her.
If your girlfriend or wife is not in the mood, don't rape her.
If your step-daughter is watching TV, don't rape her.
If you break into a house and find a woman there, don't rape her.
If your friend thinks it's okay to rape someone, tell him it's not, and that he's not your friend.
If your "friend" tells you he raped someone, report him to the police.
If your frat-brother or another guy at the party tells you there's an unconscious woman upstairs and it's your turn, don't rape her, call the police and tell the guy he's a rapist.
Tell your sons, god-sons, nephews, grandsons, sons of friends it's not okay to rape someone.
Don't simply tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape.
Don't imply that she could have avoided it if she'd only done/not done x.
Don't imply that it's in any way her fault.
Don't let silence imply agreement when someone tells you he "got some" with the drunk girl.
If a woman/girl/female leaves a drink or food unattended, don't put anything in that drink or food. it's not yours. she is not yours. leave the drink or food alone.
Don't perpetuate a culture that tells you that you have no control over or responsibility for your actions.
(* Adding: the same goes for children and men, don't rape them)
