I have a pair of jeans like that myself. It's irritating, but not *that* big a deal for me, since there's real pockets in the back.

But half of Ana's clothes, it seems, have flaps but no pockets, or stitchery that looks like a pocket (but isn't), or, in one notable case, an actual pocket on her overals that is essentially made useless by the embroidery one it. It's damn *annoying*, especially when you ignorantly say "put that in your pocket" and they can't, so they get upset.

And all that pink, too. God, if I never see another little girl in pink, I can die happy. It's not even that I dislike the color, it's just so predominant, it gets tiresome. I do my level best (usually) to dress her in non-pink clothing - or at least, to make it so that the pink is minimal, not the entire outfit. Today I didn't quite manage that, but that's not *my* fault. When Ana gets bigger and needs new clothes, I'll see if I can campaign to get Less Pink in her clothing. (I'm still putting out a call for boy clothes, by the way, if anybody has any to donate to the cause here. She's ~ a 2T, but a bit on the short side.)

If you're in the city tomorrow, you might want to go to this thing in Battery Park City...

I think it has some safety feature. I know on infant/toddler clothes at Old Navy, that was one of the selling points (in addition to things being fire-retardant, extra stitched, short ties, grippy socks, etc.). And if it's an item that runs through a range of sizes (like newborn to 4T), they may just think it's easier/cheaper to do without pockets, as a big portion of people in that size range have no use for pockets anyway. But on adult stuff, fake pockets, especially on pants, really irritate me.

My personal peeve a few years ago as I was hitting puberty was pockets on the chest of shirts that were intended for teenage or adult women. Just... whyyyy?

I hate pretend pockets. I agree that kids clothes have no need for pretend pockets -- better to have no pockets at all.

Of course, my newest pair of dress pants have no pockets, pretend or otherwise. And I am lost. . . .

Also, overalls. I loved 'em until I hit puberty. Then one day I just couldn't wear them anymore.

I hate pretend pockets, and I'm not a fan of pink but my daughter goes thru pink phases. Now is one. Pink and black. I don't bother trying to influence it, she actually has a nice style most of the time, so I just let it go.

I do laugh when I suggest something, she vetoes it without thought and then wants it a while later (like Chuck Taylors).

I can see *no* pockets being some weird-ass safety feature, but *pretend* pockets--how, do you know?

I think that's where fashion comes in. It's cute and trendy and all that for young'uns to wear overalls or cargo pants or 5 pocket pants, but they don't have a need for pockets when very little, so they get the look of pockets, but still they're closed up or tiny so that fingers can't get caught or whatever.

She doesn't have to mention favorite colors but enough times insisting on wearing certain clothes or turning her nose up at others...Finbar, who spoke very little, seemed to gravitate towards yellow all the time. Given a choice in clothing, it was usually yellow shirts (and shorts he had no yellow pants). But the words had nothing to do with it.

Of course yes if you limit her exposure...heh. :D

IT is so unfair because so many little ones LOVE pockets and love putting things in them! It makes me smile when I see a kid stuff something in a pocket, a very small kid, or to do laundry and find little treasures in a pocket.

Did you ever hear of a book called The Giver? Every year they had a rite of passage for children based on age, and getting clothing with pockets was one of them. It meant they were old enough to be trusted with some of their items.

I used to have a pair of jeans with pockets so small they were absolutely useless. What good are pockets when your Chap-stick falls on the floor every time you bend over or sit down?

I once lost a wallet that way - the pockets weren't too small, but they WERE placed too high in the back, so the end result was my wallet got pushed out when I walked. Luckily, a kind soul turned it into the police AND I was able to pick it up that day due to the very nice policewoman NOT logging in in to the system (it was my 21st birthday and I REALLY wanted that ID!)

Abdul and I DO try to avoid pink. It's just not that easy when a) you have in-laws and b) you need to shop in the cheap stores. There's some FANTASTIC clothing in darker, more "European" colors, but they're also at chi-chi prices.

Lots of the boy stuff (at least at Old Navy) are, say, sweatshirts with stupid logos on them or team numbers or something. And I am rather averse to most words on shirts...
