When we were at Historic Richmondtown? And we stopped at the giftshop? I, like, got this pennywhistle? And you know what? Once I figured out how to play it? I realized? I CAN PLAY BY EAR ON THIS THING TOO!

Cooooool.

And once I forget how you're supposed to make things go up an octive (by "blowing harder", which doesn't seem to work), I can do that as well. Their advice is just sucky advice. Or I can't understand what they mean when they say that, which amounts to just about the same thing.

*goes off to practice*

Yay pennywhistle! My dad went through an obsession a while back and ended up with about 10 different kinds. And a fife.

You really do blow harder - not a lot, just slightly, and at a certain point it just jumps up an octave. And the fingering is slightly different, isn't it? I can't remember.

Jumping an octave is done by increasing the speed of the airflow down the pipe. It takes quite a bit (possibly more than you expect) and it helps if you support the breath with your diaphram.

*grin*

I could try and explain further if you'd like :)
frequency (ie pitch) = wavelenth / time ... or something like that if I remember rightly :). And wavelength is determined by the length of the instrument and what finger holes are uncovered.

Those things are SO much fun.

And it is blowing harder, but it's not blowing harder like blowing out a candle it's....

Blowing harder like playing a flute. Omg, that makes no sense, I'm sorry. *Flute player*
