[livejournal.com profile] ladydiana has a tiny problem. After reading HBP, she went out to find some interesting discussion - and somehow managed to find nothing by chan, slash, and so on. Mostly non-PG stuff. I'm still not sure how she did that.

Anyway, believing as I do that fanfic in HP is overwhelmed with all sorts of romance, I offered to beg youse guys to show up with lists of gen fic, and also links to interesting, non-slashy discussions on HP from, oh, the last month or so.

Lists of good references to find these things would also be appreciated.

Because, honestly, if I were looking for talk, and all I found was a bunch of stuff I'm not interested in, I'd be a little freaked out too.

While you do that, I'll be sorting out my bookmarks, separating the wheat from the chaff. See, I'm addicted to the written word, and I have a perverse fondness for not-so-good stories, so I'll have to sort out all the urg fic and discussions before I can point her in that direction.

And I know, a lot of you don't like fanfic at all. That's your perogative. I have a nice side discussion with Diana right now about the concept of the author owning the story. I'm not entirely sure where I stand on that issue, but I have some vague feelings about it.

Heh. Problem, indeed.

It's not so much that I found stuff I wasn't interested in (although that certainly was a problem), my main problem was stuff that I saw clearly violated the author's intent and in some cases, I found completely predatory.

Honestly, I told someone about two months ago, "I don't care if you fuck every single person that went to that club. I won't even call you a whore, beacuse I can't be bothered to work up that much judgment about it. But they have to be of age, and able to consent, and do it behind closed doors. Swing from the chandelier, for all I care...the only thing I have to say is, 'use condoms'". I'm not "prude", but I really could do without constant bombardment of Harry having his ass pounded by Snape without lube.

Yanno?

It depends on what it is. If it involves someone like Harry and Draco, I don't want to read it. I MIGHT be willing to read Snape/Lucius (less likely, since I don't care, really, for either of those characters), or Snape/Dumbledore. I'd ABSOLUTELY be interested in Worple/Sanguini.

So pleased to see someone who agrees with me about the often horrific aspects of HP slash.

For links to discussion, I look at [livejournal.com profile] daily_snitch and sometimes places like [livejournal.com profile] hptheories, but that was a lot more interesting in the week after the book had been released. I haven't dared look for a discussion board or any other Harry Potter communities. I've had bad experiences with it as well.

Help?

In my neck of the woods, "HPB" is Half Price Books, a used book/CD/DVD/various goodies chain.

And pimping myself a bit, but [livejournal.com profile] dimmeststar hasn't had any smut yet, and is unlikely to have much if any slash fic or discussion.

AJ Hall's fic at http://www.shoesforindustry.net/ is what I would call 'genslash'. There is a m/m relationship in it (Draco/Neville ...) and a bit of noncanon het (Harry/sportsfans, Hermione/I-forget-who), but they're not at all the point of the story, and the story itself is PG, if that. It's novel-length and plot-heavy, but her writing style is something of an acquired taste, and honestly, I've only ever made it through "Lust Over Pendle," which is as good a starting point as any (and the title evidently references some British novel I've never read, rather than having anything to do with the actual contents of the story).

That's the only HP fic I can remember reading right now. *shrug*

Oh, and I should add that it's a post-Hogwarts adventure, so all the key players are in their 20s or better. (One of the reasons I don't read much HP fic is that I can't stand kids and don't want them in my fic.)

I'm neutral on babies provided that they're 1. clean 2. quiet 3. someone else's responsibility. Also helps if they're actually born at the time; pregnancy squicks me something fierce. Kids are messy, loud, and unpredictable, not to mention entirely too impressionable. Teens are that, plus the fact that I used to be one not long ago and wish that I could go back in time and kick myself until I spat out some of my emo.

Really, my goal in life is to be the crazy cat lady who terrifies kids who try to cut across her lawn on the way to school.

(Ironically, I've recently started reading The Authority comics and fallen completely in love with the cuteness of a character who's introduced as a newborn and shown growing up through the series -- double-cuteness when she's with her scary superhuman battlemachine dad who is wrapped securely around her finger and tied into a bow. She's a special case.)

What's "chan" in this context?

You mean shota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shota)? That's what I call it. Unless we're talking girls; then it's loli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolicon). The term's cutting a bit close with Harry Potter as the kids get older, but it's still the first thing that pops into my head.

I'd never heard the term "chan" used in this context before, and it took me a bit to Google for anything related. Might be because I'm exposed to anime and manga fanfiction/fanart more than Harry Potter, so I'm used to the Japanese terms.

Although I love me some good slash, shota (and loli, for that matter, though I have more experience with shota) doesn't do anything for me, especially when it's sexually explicit. Sort of a pain in the ass when all typical Japanese yaoi/BL PC games have the token shota character. I have no interest in shota HP fic (too much good slash out there to waste time on that), and the only Snape/Harry fic I've read, although horribly fascinating, turned me off. I've never read any loli HP fic, and I don't plan to, though I know Snape/Hermione is popular.

I'd be interested in some links to good fanfic as well that isn't really based on shipping. I'm not really much of a shipper, for me, HP isn't really about the romance.

I'd love to find some fic featuring Lupin that wasn't a gay sexual fantasy concerning he, Sirius, or Snape. It's not that I have anything against people having gay sexual fantasies, I don't. But I don't see any canon support for it, and mixing HP with explicit sexuality just isn't my taste.
