[Poll #535887]

I cut this poll short because there are just too many places in this world where everything is wrong.

*pokes* the compulosory "resettling" of poor people out of property they own to "clean up" crime areas. So far the death count is 50+ simply form people who werei n houses that a bull dozer ran over with no advacne warning. God knows how many have died in the concentration camps mugabe is shovignthe displaced into, but current reports sugest he is both starving and depriving them of cleaning water. HUmanatrian aid that attempts to reach the displaced people is confiscated by the army.

I'll cut my comment short, too much going on in the world.

cpt.org for example has a list of 'em...

I should probably take refuge under my desk after this comment, but...

Other: I avoid the news, aside from what is useful in determining my vote.

Not based on sanity, actually. (Well, not when it comes to human news; animal cruelty ones I do avoid.)

It's that I spent quite a while, several years ago, trying to keep up with everything -- world news, local news, national news, animal rights news, disability rights news, gay rights news, religious in/tolerance news...and I eventually discovered that while I was informed, I had no time/energy to make any of it better. A little like taking 10 subjects in school, then missing all of the papers and final exams because I was too busy trying to get all of the reading done.

So beyond general awareness, I cut back to topics that were really important to me, and that I could make a difference in, since the whole point of being aware/knowledgeable is (as far as I know) fighting the situations that make the news necessary. A doctor or teacher can feel as knowledgeable as they wish, but are they fulfilling their purpose if they have no time to operate or teach? :)

I kinda used this, and some Bible passages, to prove that the world is not coming to an end anytime soon.

I've got a lot of the Middle East, and almost the entire Balkans covered.

Which is enough to have me committed, let me just tell you.

Okay, I feel like an idiot. I know what's happening in Zimbabwe, Sudan and Israel but...what's happening in Washington? (Assuming of course you mean washington state)

Wait, Washington state? I was assuming Washington, D.C.!

Maybe I can change my vote....

Could be! If that's the case then I'm not so much of a doofus as I thought. But I always assume Washington state unless it says D.C. :)

Well, there's the usual stuff about North Korea and nukes, the usual stuff about Iraq and oil (Iraq is our sixth greatest provider), the usual stuff about China and militarism, the usual stuff about Iran and human rights violations...

The news can be rather depressing...
