OMG! He's aspie! It's not his fault he was responsible for the deaths of innocents!

Except, of course, that it is. I don't care what was going through his mind, you don't get a free pass from being an accessory to murder.

Much more compelling, I think, is the argument that his family was threatened. Naturally, of course, that's not the part of the story that the media is choosing to pick up on. Arg.

In other "news", we have a letter about prostitution and disability which deserves to be saved here for posterity.

In Holland sex workers service the disabled

I read a disturbing article the other night in the July 2005 issue of Marie Claire magazine. In the section Real Lives the headline reads " Prostitution Gives me Power". Three sex workers in Holland were profiled. Jacqueline, age 39 writes the following:

" Today, I have a few clients from a special escort agency that caters to people with mental, physical and social disabilities. A guy who is disabled gets a lot of care and physical contact, like being washed and fed, but it's very professional contact. It's nice for a guy to have the chance to feel like a sexual being, not just a disabled person who needs care. There are many ways of helping people, but sometimes a snuggle, some undivided attention and sex are important."

As the single parent to two boys on the autism spectrum ages 9 and 10 this paragraph bothered me greatly. At least we live in the United States and not Holland. After pondering this for awhile I did a search prostitutes servicing the disabled and found this topic is well known.

Over at Blackchat in the UK one poster stated, "I dont see why these people should be denied sex if someone out there is prepared to service them". Another member shared the following in a post, "I have even been told by several nurses that on occasion they have done a sexual favour for a male patient where there was nothing in it for themselves."

The topic of prostitution made its way to another board that no longer exists. Many seemed to agree with this statement, "But you do realize you have managed to pull out of the hat the most sympathetic prostitution example possible: Prostitute as Care-giver of the Disabled."

Kirkby Times News out of the UK published in 2004 an article on prostitution that revealed, "In Holland there is a scheme for disabled people, both physical and mentally disabled, to have a home visit off what they call 'professional sex workers', this is perhaps a positive social aspect of sex workers."

Disability Now is a popular magazine in the UK where the disabled can find sex, this according to postings I have perused. There just so happens to be a forum with the topic on sex and whether an OT or social services should help their client find sex.

After absorbing all this data I am relieved that this is taking place in other countries. Unfortunately the last link I looked into brought the issue closer to home. This was published in the Las Vegan Magazine of Las Vegas where the author of the article was invited into a legal brothel:

"Another prostitute does not have any porn in her room. She uses meditation type music and massages her clients with massage oil or lotion. She enjoys doing this, especially with handicapped people who are often touch-hungry. She has had clients who are disabled, blind, retarded, etc., and she feels she is doing a special service for these people who may not otherwise have a chance to be sexual with a woman."

To be honest I have no idea what other parents of children on the Autism Spectrum feel about this, but most of those who are high functioning will lead productive lives and not need constant care. I am most certain my son with severe autism will live with me his adult life, where his brother is looking forward to learning how to drive a car, working in the real world and having a cat someday. His deficits happen to be in the social area and now I worry who will prey on him while he is out there trying to fit in.

In my opinion this topic of prostitutes servicing the disabled is as hot a subject as sterilization of young women with disabilities. Luckily I have several more years with my son before he lives on his own. We already have two books, Taking Care of Myself: A Hygiene, Puberty and Personal Curriculum for Young People with Autism and My Body, My Self for Boys: The "What's Happening to My Body?" Workbook for Boys that we peruse regularly.

I'm trying to see what the problem here is. She sees prositution as morally wrong? Okay, lots of people do. I'm sure she can instill those values in her kid. Unlikely that he'll be preyed on by a prostitute. Am I the only one who is creeped out by that letter/article?

For some reason when I read the text you wrote for the first link - my first thought was the article would be about Dubya. Scary.

Now, I know he's not Aspie - right? - but I suppose I'd just woken up and my brain still isn't fully functional. ;)
