When I was very little, I didn't like this holiday. We have pictures of me at four or five (but looking older, as I was wont to do), standing outside on the 4th covering my ears. The sparklers scared me ever since I had read (at four or five) that they burned at a very high temperature (10,000 degrees, I think) and could cause serious injuries. The noise scared me. The idea that I could get thunked in the head by a falling firework casing scared me. I stayed on our stoop, or inside.

By the time we moved to 18th Avenue, I felt a little better about it. By then, I loved the noise. We went up to the roof to watch the fireworks (Daddy said they were paid for by the mob, but I'm pretty sure he didn't say it to me), and we were so close, and the noise went straight through me. But I went down again often to be with Midnight, who did *not* like the noise, and did *not* like being left alone with all the scary booms coming down on her.

We moved here, and for a while we watched our fireworks on the boat, or at the terminal. Standing outside, you can see the fireworks from Jersey, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. They're not close, and they're not loud, but you can see them clearly.

We didn't do that last year. Holidays used to be a big thing, my dad loved them, but... Jenn and Mommy never really wanted to go through all those preparations, I think.

And now Xiggy's coming to visit. No idea what we'll do to celebrate.
