I hate that argument. And do you know why? Because it's stupid.

Not Worksafe is a phrase used to describe things which you don't want your boss seeing while you're at work. It also describes things you don't want your parents seeing when you're home for a visit, and things you don't want the librarian seeing when you have no internet at home, and things you don't want cute little kiddies seeing when you're in an internet cafe. It also means things that you don't want yourself seeing, ever.

So why do people keep coming up with this pedantic argument about why they should be allowed to post uncut porn wherever they like without getting called out for being rude?

It also means things you don't want random passersby seeing in a university computer lab. That's my biggest gripe about people who wantonly post this stuff in easily accessible places-- I do quite a bit of browsing from public terminals on campus, where everyone around me can see what's on my monitor!

And as for the "you shouldn't be online at work" thing-- well, many workplaces let you get online during your lunch break, but don't repeal any of their harassment policies during lunch, either. Heh.

You know, I've never thought of that before, but you're right. Whenever I see something "not work safe" at a public terminal, I ignore it and move on, lest people think I'm a pervert or something.

Not to mention that some people are allowed to surf the 'net at work. I used to work a call centre job where each terminal was online so that we could access the product's website - and we were freely permitted to browse or chat in between calls, so long as we weren't caught looking at anything illegal/obscene. I know of several offices where similar arrangements are in place, provided that workers agree to content being monitered.

And that, boys and girls, is why the NSFW cut is our friend.

I was allowed online at work. I was just playing secretary, but I could easily read LJ and answer calls at the same time. To my understanding, quite a lot of jobs of this nature are like this.

So those people can cram it. ^^ We all know they're just saying it to be assholes.

We're told at the library that we're not allowed to be online ever even if there's nothing to do at all.

Having said that, I should point out that I'm at the library right now...

I'm allowed to be on at work, considering that I bring my own computer, but my bosses still wouldn't be happy at all if they walked by and saw me looking at horrible traumatizing porn or something. So, yes, it is a v. stupid argument.

I know, I know. I'm a naughty brat! But we got tired of watching movies and drawing pictures of other staff members getting eaten by monsters.

You think I'm kidding, don't you?

I'm one of the few (many) who abuse their Internet privileges at work... I'm... just so goddamned bored! And I do programming for a debt collection software provider.

Yeah, I feel pretty scummy. Looking to get out.

So... "Hi." You answered my stupid question that I wasn't able to find in the FAQ for whatever reason, and so I uncharacteristically looked at your journal.

Interesting. :)

I've also added you, hope that's okay.

That's Larie, one of the clerks, having a picnick with Abe Lincoln. She's about to get eaten by Timmy.

Incase you can't tell, Timmy has a spatula hand

I want to know why those people don't post their social security numbers, their bank account numbers, and their home addresses.

I used to have a job that allowed being online. I used to IRC from work. I worked 12AM to 8AM at the security desk for my school. They wanted to make sure I'd stay awake, so they encouraged using the computer recreationally, so long as when someone did show up or I had a call, I didn't let being online interfere with me doing my job. If I'd used LJ at the time, I'd have been reading LJ. They were pretty lenient about what I could see, but they wouldn't have liked anything too nasty, on the off chance that somebody came by and saw it, as it could reflect badly on the school.

When I worked as a receptionist, I regularly checked my email during my lunch break. Nobody else used my computer while I was out, so there was no problem. The issue of NSFW stuff never came up, but they probably wouldn't have liked it if they'd seen anything too nasty.

Lots of jobs allow for computer use, yet set limits.

Ahh.... I guess I was just being stupid myself; the question in question was actually neutral in intelligence. ;)
