Why would any channel take a show with so few episodes if they were only planning to run the re-runs...?

(There's an obvious answer to this question, of course. I've seen Firefly by now. Liked it well enough, though one or two of the episodes were Not Up To Par (yes, all those words are capitalized), though even those had their good points.)

You know, in all the articles I've read about Firefly that mention Jewel Staite and her other roles, none of them have ever mentioned Space Cases.

And I think it's the right one in this case. Universal owns Sci-Fi; Universal are bringing Serenity to cinemas. Do the maths. ^_^

probably because after the movie comes out (september) they'll want to assess whether it's worth continuing the series.

and then I will jump for joy!

I don't know if it's true, but I was told Fox cancelled Firefly because it was doing well. Apparently they don't want long-running hits - they want something that'll be popular for a year or two and then fade. Things that stay popular require salary increases to the actors to keep the show going. Star Trek: The Next Generation became massively expensive to produce by the time it ended because the stars could demand huge salaries. So, when they saw the show was becoming too popular, they cancelled it early to prevent that and make way for something that'd catch some interest for a bit and then have people get bored of it.

Presumably - if the movie doesn't alienate fans. But there may be aspects to television and marketing that I'm not taking into consideration. But I do know that Firefly has a really solid, dedicated fan base.
