The scene where Westley is complaining to Buttercup about her lack of faith in him. Whine, whine, whine.

And then it occurs to me. Yes, Westley, Mr. I-rob-and-kill-people-for-money, in all this time, you were so much in love, you couldn't've dropped her a letter? A quick note saying "Dear Buttercup. I'm not dead. I might get killed in the morning, but then again, I might not. Hard to say. Do me a favor and water my ficus. Thanks. Yrs, Dread Pirate Roberts Westley."

I mean, would that have been so hard? He could've had one of the fired pirate crew members go over with a message or something, or dropped some parchment in a bottle, or asked that old marshmallow, The Pirate Formerly Known as Roberts, and Ryan Before That to kidnap her or something.

Westley's a bastard. Really.

On the other hand, this probably is why he looks a lot better as a pirate than as a farmboy. Because he's got that bad boy mystique going.

Excellent letter, and, really, this is why the prince charming type is much more high maintenance than they will ever admit. It's always run off here and adventure there and never a word for those left at home. . . .

I just read that book about a week ago, and a similar thought ran through my head. Though in my case, it was more that he responded to her living declaration of love by ditching her in order to make riches far away that he likely could make just as easily in their homeland, and then had the gall to get upset that she was *forced* into a finance-focused relationship after she thought he had died?

It's not just that he's a bastard -- he's a f*ing hypocrite, too!

Just to add -- I never did like Buttercup or Westley.

I always identified much more strongly with Inigo, and found him much more appealing as well. ;)

Exactly... Also, I know she's not the brightest, but how could she fail to recongnize him in one way or another? If not by the lower half of his face (let's face it, masks don't do *that* much for concealment) then at least by his height, voice, the way he moved, etc. ...

What I also always wondered: why was Humperdink so obsessed with having an actual corpse of the "kidnapped" Princess? Why not just use the scrap of clothing from Guilder to claim they had kidnapped her, begin the war he wanted so badly, and let everybody assume the enemy country had disposed of her body in a swamp or something? (I could point out obvious parallels in what our government has gotten away with regarding wars they wished to wage, of course, but I won't. ;)

Hmm -- I know that Buttercup was dim, but I could have sworn it that Westley was actually very intelligent. (In the book, he's said to be constantly reading in the middle of the night, then he's the one that orchestrates the creative raid on the castle, etc.)

I was always under the impression that he went after her but saw that she was with the prince and thought to himself "Well, I guess she really felt nothing for me all that time. I suppose that I'll just leave her alone instead of getting back in her life and muddling things up. But he was so vastly in love with her that he couldn't leave her alone and came to check on her from time to time and just happened to see her getting kidnapped...

okay, I'm stretching it a bit, aren't I?
