Date: 2005-05-05 05:25 pm (UTC)boyfriend sounds too high schoolish or temporary.
I used to call him my SO, but he told me he didn't really like the term. I liked it as it was nicely descriptive (significant other... he's significant and not me) and it's gender neutral, which I prefer. I am very heterosexual, so all of my partners are likely to be male, but I still think adopting gender neutral terms is a better idea, as it makes it easier for others who don't fit as well and don't want to always broadcast their sexuality just to discuss their partner(s).
So, then I floundered looking for a term... and decided lothario was cute as it's a play on one of his real names, and it's descriptive. He is a seducer of women or, at least, of me. And I talked him into accepting it. So, it became my term of choice. Although when around people I don't know well, I will sometimes refer to him as "my gentleman friend". This is a bit misleading as I have many gentleman friends who I have much less intense relationships with, but I'm okay with that ambiguity. Although "my gentleman friend" does seem to imply that he is my only significant other, which I feel the other terms do not do. While he is currently my only romantic partner, I do hope that won't be a permanent situation, and I prefer the room for expansion. Plus, if I refer to him as my lothario in my journal and then do obtain another partner, it will be easier to find a second term to fit the other person and not totally confuse my friends.
But basically, because English sucks and the institution of marriage is corrupt so he's not becoming my husband unless we absolutely have to for legal reasons.

Date: 2005-05-05 05:43 pm (UTC)He's really not very fluffy. I find I get along better with strong men who err on the side of honest rather than tactful. Not cruel or mean ones, but just blunt ones able to stand up for themselves. Otherwise I run the risk of overpowering the person and being controlling by accident. So, I just don't think I'm likely to be with a fluffy cuddlebunny.
