Can I say pwned? Is this an appropriate use of the word pwned? Is this, in fact, the definition of pwned made painfully clear?

I posted it this morning, and originally got the link from Boingboing.net so it might have been me. :)

Now that I think of it -- here's the BoingBoing post since it has links to the original lecture video in various formats:

A lot of things he says in his speech make me think he's totally bluffing to scare the kid (I mean, really. Why would anyone store so much important, confidential data on a laptop that they take everywhere and not even encrypt it?), but he gets points for creativity. ;D

According to [livejournal.com profile] apocalypse_0:

The laptop was found outside his office at 11:50 with the following note:

"Hi Prof!

Here's your laptop.

I ran a machine dump on it, hashed the output, and sent it to Microsoft via Certified Mail. As a professor, you should have known better than to engage in software piracy. Microsoft agrees, and you should expect to be served by their lawyers within the day.

The wireless card was easily replaced, giving a new MAC address. I almost feel bad for joey@hotmail.com when the heavies come to investigate his new eBay purchase.

I'm shocked at how poorly you've secured the NIH data. Anyhow, it's been anonymously re-mailed to them, as I sorely doubt you'll have the time to complete your work.

The 2nd and 3rd largest biotech companies have paid me most handsomely releasing those trade "secrets" into the Public Domain -- it will save them billions in license fees. In contrast, the largest biotech company will be most curious as to how you utterly failed to properly secure and protect their trade secrets, per your agreement. I hate to think of what they'll do to you for the damage you've caused them. Again, you should expect to be served within the day.

As for the IPO, the information was illuminating. I'm planning to short the hell out of it, and expect to make quite the tidy bundle when I share how piss-poor the company plan is.

Still, you were correct that my academic career is at an end. With the money I've got offshore, I see no point in continuing my education here.

Regards,

Your thief."
